Faecal incontinence

Faecal incontinence does not only mean passing stool. It includes the involuntary loss of gas. The most common type is urgency, when the urge is so strong there is often no time to reach the toilet.

The most common type of faecal incontinence is called urgency, when the urge to defecate is so strong that there is often no time to reach the toilet, causing accidents that frequently lead people to withdraw socially to avoid an embarrassing moment.

There is also passive incontinence, in which leakage occurs and the person is unaware of it.

Tesla Care: a device that works through an electromagnetic field; the patient sits in a special chair. It is used to speed strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles through contractions applied to that musculature.

Biofeedback: a tool that helps re-educate and train the pelvic muscles, so the patient can see the degree and quality of muscle contraction on a screen that guides different types of contractions.

Therapeutic exercise is fundamental: it not only improves muscle strength and endurance, but also teaches how to manage the pressures generated in the body during effort.

As a recommendation it is also useful to limit intake of some foods such as:

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Dairy products
  • Fatty foods
  • Spicy food
  • Among others…

Nutritional advice is essential to support progress in therapy.
